Stories from the field

One More Pass

Swallow-tailed Kite

Its buoyancy in the air mesmerized the two-legged fans on the ground, who watched through binoculars and cameras, their eyes in awe as the swallow-tailed kite searched for food.

The kind of moments that make the time waiting disappear into thin air.

On my first day, all I got was a blob in the air. The second day, I found myself on the wrong side of the field.

Then a fellow birder blocked my car so that I couldn't move. Finally, another birder and I made our way to see it in a tree where it was known to perch.

I then found myself alone on the edge of the field hoping that the swallow-tailed kite would make one more flight pass for the day.

And at 1:20 p.m., it indeed made one more pass as I stood alone on the edge of the field 🙂

Two hours to get there. Two trips out there. Hours of being there. Two days of standing and waiting there. All to see this beauty flying through the air.

It was so worth it. Met extraordinary people. Had great conversations. And got a few shots of the latest Minnesota bird celebrity.
